In 1819 the Rev. Roger Smith purchased a half acre from Daniel Glacken for a church and a burial ground.
It is the second oldest Catholic worship site in Cecil County, Maryland · Built in 1819, the chapel is a testimonial to the impact of the Bill of Rights and the American Constitution. This chapel was built by Irish immigrants working on the Susquehanna canals and the local lumbering industry. In Ireland, the Penal Laws denied suffrage to Catholics. They were not allowed to have schools and the ownership of property was carefully restricted. Rentals and taxes were designed to drive Catholics off the land. In their new country, they had the freedom to worship, and to build their own church, rights guaranteed by the Bill of Rights. It is note worthy that these immigrants, who certainly were not wealthy, used their meager savings to build a worship site, an investment that as Americans they felt secure enough to do. · It is one of the oldest public buildings in Cecil County and is part of the heritage and history of the county as well as the state of Maryland. · In 1978 the site was considered valuable enough by the state of Maryland to be placed on the register of the Maryland Historic Trust as a historic site.

Friends of St. Patrick’s Chapel UPDATE – June 9, 2019 Good Shepherd School Students visit chapel Students from Good Shepherd School visited St. Patrick’s Chapel on May 28. While the students were presented with a Power-Point presentation of the background history of the chapel, they were, nevertheless significantly observant of some of the features of the chapel which were not “routines” for them. For example, one student wanted to know the purpose of the stove pipe sticking out from the ceiling (it originally hooked up to a pot-bellied stove which was situated in the middle of the chapel) and another was fascinated by the wavy glass panes (the original windows did not contain the plate glass found in modern windows). The students enjoyed their visit and the Historical Society was happy to serve as their host. Diocese May Includes St. Patrick’s Chapel In Historical TV Presentation On May 29, Bob Krebs, the Director of the Office of Public Relations for the Diocese of Wilmington, visited St. Patrick’s Chapel. He also had his TV camera. The purpose of his visit was to record the history of the chapel and also capture the story of the chapel’s restoration – a process which was started around 2000, and subsequently included the formation of the St. Patrick’s Chapel Historical Society, as a non-profit 501(c)3 organization. Mr. Krebs was later provided with a musical CD of a historical piece created by the Irish Jasper Green musical group, which could possibly be used as background music. We all await the final product. Port Deposit VFW Post Makes Donation The Port Deposit VFW recently provided a donation to St. Patrick’s Chapel. The interesting aspect of this donation is the fact that the Post is located on Rt. 222 north of Port Deposit, and is situated close to the old canal dug in the early 1800’s by Irish immigrants. It was the presence of these Irish immigrants which necessitated the building of St. Patrick’s Chapel in 1819. It’s fascinating how we are all connected. SUPPORT OUR SUPPORTERS PLEASE! Dear Friends of St. Patrick’s Chapel, I am sure that you are all familiar with the Irish Jasper Green musical group. The IJG is one of the original supporters of St. Pat’s Chapel. They have provided both physical and financial support. I have pictures of the IJG men, circa 2008, hauling pews out of the chapel in preparation of the chapel’s major restoration work. They were the highlight of the fund raising concert at John Carroll High School in 2009. As long as I can remember, wherever they are “on tour” they donate the concert funds to St. Pat. Needless to say, the Irish Jasper Green has been a major contributor to the restoration and continued support of the chapel. So why this note? The IJG’s perform twice monthly (the first and third Thursdays of the month) at the Union Hotel on Rt. 222, a couple miles north of Port Deposit. For years they have drawn a sufficient audience to satisfy the restaurant/lounge management. In recent months, however, the audience has diminished, and the management has indicated that their “contract” is at risk. Sad! Here we have folks, who play simply to entertain and help others. It seems to me that it’s time for us to return the favor. So, what do you do? Simply drop in (8pm - ) have a beer or two, and enjoy the music and happy banter which is a trade mark of all their performances. They have helped us all these years; it’s time for us to help them! The second winner, pictured on the left, was Maria Mastrippolito from Colora, MD. It should be noted that this annual raffle event has been made possible by Rita Lerch who has been producing these beautiful quilts for over ten years. Rita, has not only kept a lot of people warm with her many quilts, but her quilting skills have added significantly to the financial support of the chapel. We all thank you, Rita. Friends of St. Patrick’s Chapel UPDATE – April 26, 2019 St. Pat Board Loses Founding Board Member In the mid-1990’s St. Patrick’s Chapel was not a major concern for me. It was, however, (as I learned later) of concern and interest for Ken Miller. Ken, who was a neighbor and fellow Good Sheppard Church parishioner, was a frequent chapel visitor. Ken introduced me to the chapel, and it was through Ken that I learned about the chapel’s fascinating history. Jack Scarbath was similarly influenced. The rest of the story is history. We established the historical society (naturally Ken was a board member), initiated fund-raising campaigns, issued restoration contracts, rebuilt the chapel and dedicated the “new” chapel in 2010. In his quiet way, Ken was always there. In recent years he was physically hampered by poor health. Last week he died; the chapel lost a very good friend. We all lost a very good friend. God bless you, Ken. The Grass Was Never Greener ! In February and March you always worry about how the grass will look come the summer season. The winter months always leave a sad looking lawn. However the chapel is very lucky to have a group that is dedicated to the chapel’s appearance. For years the Ancient Order of Hibernians from Harford County have taken care of the chapel lawn. This year was no exception. The riding mover spent the winter months in Bel Air for reconditioning, and recently returned to the chapel for the first mowing of the season. The job, as pictured above, was handled by AOH members Mike Crandell, Tom O’Hara and Bob Baker. Usually this crew also includes John Wilson and Jim Cosgrove. The AOH crew has been handling the grass chores at the chapel for many, many years, and as mentioned above, the grass has never looked better! Thank you, gentlemen; we don’t know what we would do without you. Dates to Remember – places these on your calendar: May 18, Sat. – St. Kevin’s Mass. 10:00 am. Chapel door open at 9:00am. June 29, Sat. – Open house. 10 am – 2 pm. Refreshment will be served. Historical information, materials available. September 14, Sat. – 200th anniversary Mass, Bishop Malooly celebrating. Visitors from Diocese Recently Joe Corsini, Chief Fiscal Officer, and Bob Krebs, Communications Director, for the Diocese of Wilmington, visited St. Pat. The visit was prompted by plans to create a video story of the chapel, similar to what they had already done with other historical sites. I had initially informed them that due to small size of the chapel that their video would require only 5 minutes. They, nevertheless wanted to visit the chapel. They watched our Power Point presentation and had the chapel tour. Evidently they were sufficiently impressed because they plan to return in June with the entire film crew. Their only instructions – remember to cut the grass ! The Friends of St. Patrick’s Chapel UPDATE is distributed to folks interested in the future of St. Patrick’s Chapel.
